As a student majoring in human health, I have gotten the privilege to explore all aspects of the human body and mind. For instance, in my HLTH331:Exporting Mental Health we learn the ethics and controversies of mental health, as well as different mental disorders. In class we explore the mind in ways that make me reflect what I have considered normal or abnormal. Not only do we discuss the impact of having mental illnesses, but we also relate it to the real world and our daily experiences. In class this morning, my professor asked to us to think of ways we have seen ‘health’ used in our life. We argued how ‘health’ was portrayed in reality: being skinny, being pretty, having good skin, looking youthful, etc. Before having this morning's discuss, I never noticed how the media and capitalism has changed or affected society's view of 'health'.
As I gain more appreciation for the department I am majoring in, I come to the understanding that health is more than just an individual’s lack of sickness: it's a community, it's a process, it's a lifestyles, it’s you. Within my human health community, I have come to find a group of characters that want to change the world, either through becoming a doctor-without-borders or becoming a health policy maker. While many strive to change the world, I know many students majoring in human health purely because they want to learn more about the human and the human body. Overall, students in the human health society unite by having a drive to study and absorb the human body. My purpose for majoring in human health was to cultivate a comprehension of why the body functions the way it does and why we, as human, do what we do and react the way we react. Nevertheless, I want to use my major to associate it to all other features of life.
